1. Introduction

The new Mercedes-Benz Sedan of the highest class appeared in the market in September, 1998.

By production of the new car the set of technical innovations is applied. Among them and a row for the first time the offered auxiliary systems.

"Distronic" automatically maintains a safe distance to ahead the going car.

The electronic Comand system facilitates use of the autoradio tape recorder, phone, navigation system and TV.
The control panel is equipped with the central display allowing to adjust individually various functions of the car and reports about it to the driver.

The smart card of inductive system of authorization of "Keyless-Go" allows to do without traditional keys of doors and ignition keys.
The comfortable, ventilated seats with a multicircuit back are established.

The side safety cushions which are included in the basic package over side glasses and in all doors provide reliable protection of passengers at side crash.

The design of cars of a S-class perfectly is in harmony with a difficult technique and emphasizes the major properties inherent in the Sedan: elegance, dynamics, quality and comfort. The major stylistic elements are the coupe-like silhouette giving to a new S-class sports and, at the same time, an elegant type, and also an attractive forward part of the car with characteristic headlights and a typical front grille.

Along with increase in length of salon by 17 mm, length of a body of a new S-class decreased by 75 mm. Length of salon of model with the extended wheel base is more, than at the previous model on 37 mm.

The car is issued in two options of execution of a body: with the standard and extended wheel base (2965 and 3085 mm), with three versions of the installed V-shaped petrol engines (six, eight and twelve cylinders).

Diesel engines – line 6-cylinder and V-shaped 8-cylinder engines with direct injection and the Common-Rail system - are installed since the end of 1999.

Petrol engines of a new S-class, thanks to a design with 3 valves and 2 spark plugs on the cylinder and to use of light alloys, spend fuels for 13-17 percent less, than engines of the previous model.

Automatic shutdown of cylinders on models S 500 cuts fuel consumption of the V-shaped eight-cylinder engine for 7 percent. Level of toxicity of exhaust gases meets not only future standards of the European Community, but also strict American instructions for cars with low toxicity of the produced gases (ULEV).

At the expense of the suspension bracket which is included in the basic package with the pneumatic damping elements, the highest level of comfortableness of the movement is reached. A combination of a pneumatic suspension bracket with the adaptive damping system, automatically change rigidity of racks shock-absorbers, depending on roughness of the road.

For safety of the movement the new S-class is equipped with electronic antistrange system (stability stabilization - ESP), the amplifier of emergency brake application (BAS) and system of anti-blocking of brakes (ABS).

The basic brake system – hydraulic, double-circuit with the vacuum amplifier.

Brake mechanisms - disk, ventilated on all wheels. The foot parking brake is used.

The steering mechanism - with the circulating balls.

Magnificent aerodynamics and use of light materials promoted decrease in fuel consumption. In comparison with the previous model of the same complete set, the new S-class weighs 300 kg less. However weight reduction goes not due to safety and comfortableness. On the contrary, thanks to high-strength steel and additional protective elements, and also development of big zones of deformation, the new S-class ensures still big safety, than the previous model.
